ANDRES GOMEZ WINS BACK-TO-BACK PBA CARMEN SALVINO CLASSIC TITLES
02/11/2013
ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Colombia native Andres Gomez, who won his first Professional Bowlers Association Tour title in the 2012 Carmen Salvino Classic at age 38, successfully defended his title with a 246-197 victory over top qualifier D.J. Archer of Friendswood, Texas, at Thunderbowl Lanes.
The Salvino Classic, conducted during the PBA Detroit Winter Swing, aired Sunday on ESPN.
Gomez, a long-time international competitor before deciding to become a full-time PBA Tour competitor, started the title match with six strikes and was never seriously challenged in winning his second career PBA Tour title.
“It’s incredible,” Gomez said. “I knew it was going to be a tough match, but I started striking and that was it.
“I don’t know if the second title feels better than the first,” he added. “Everyone says winning the first title is the toughest. I bowled against one of the best in the world (Wes Malott) to win the first time, but this one – because there were only two spots just to get to the TV shows – was very tough as well.”
Archer, who made his second career television appearance, has never won a PBA Tour title. His best previous finish was fourth in the 2004 United States Bowling Congress Masters.
Next Sunday’s 3 p.m. ET ESPN telecast will feature the Mark Roth Classic title match between top qualifiers Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz., and Scott Norton of Mission Viejo, Calif.
