HAMMER AMATEUR WATSON READY TO TAKE ON THE PROS
The United States Bowling Congress and Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour have teamed up to give six Sport League bowlers a chance to live their dreams. Brent Watson, a Hammer staff member from Parkersburg West Virginia, was fortunate enough to be one of those six.
“When I received the first phone call I thought it was someone playing a joke on me” said Watson.
This offer was no joke. It was, however, a chance to compete in an online vote against two other individuals for the right to challenge touring star Jack Jurek to a six-game match on the PBA Shark Pattern.
The PBA Experience Showdown selection process began in August 2009 for bowlers who were competing in Sport Bowling leagues nationwide. For nearly six months, the bowler with the highest actual series each week in these leagues became eligible to be entered into the PBA Experience Showdown. With over 1,300 entries sent to USBC from Sport Bowling leagues, the chances of being selected were slim.
Eighteen competitors were then randomly selected to be finalists and were then divided into six groups based on the lane condition on which they bowled to qualify. Three finalists were randomly selected from each category and bowling fans went online to vote for their favorite bowler from each of the six lane patterns.
“The fan voting was different; I would rather bowl for the spot. I was truly amazed with the huge fan support that I got,” Watson said.
Watson is not only looking forward to his chance to compete against one of the stars of the PBA Tour, but he is even thinking ahead to what a victory would mean.
“I think it would just top the PBA tour season off if one of us six finalists would beat their pro on ESPN,” said Watson. “First Tom Smallwood won, then Kelly Kulick won, and then an average JOE winning against the pros? That would make headlines.”
Hammer Brand manager Jeff Ussery had the following to say: ““Brent is a determined player who wants to get out there and compete with the best. We’re happy that he’s a part of our Hammer Amateur Staff, and we know he’ll give his best in this challenging match.”
The finals of the PBA Experience Showdown will be held April 6-7 at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas. The finals will be taped for television and are scheduled to air April 11 on ESPN.
