HAMMER BLACK WIDOW NASTY CARRIES BILL O’NEILL TO VICTORY IN 67TH LUMBER LIQUIDATORS U.S. OPEN

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Bill O’Neill proved Sunday that if you put the right tool in the hands of a craftsman, you get a work of art.

Using his Hammer Black Widow Nasty, the 2005-06 PBA Rookie of the Year cruised past defending champion Mike Scroggins, 267-207, to win his first major title in the 67th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open at Woodland Bowl.

O’Neill, who won his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title in the PBA Chameleon Championship earlier in the season in Detroit, had a spare in the first frame, failed to convert the 2-10 split in the second, but then hammered the pocket for 10 strikes in a row to race away to victory.

As No.2 qualifier for the ESPN finals, O’Neill said he chose the Black Widow Nasty for its aggressive hook characteristics. It was the same ball he also used in his 203-152 semifinal match victory over Tommy Jones.

“My Nasty gave me more hook than anything I had used before and at the same time it would hold if I was a little left of my target,” O’Neill said. “Since I like to throw the ball hard with a lot of hand, I could also add surface with a 1,000 grit pad to ensure I had the hook I needed.”

Along with the biggest victory of his career, O’Neill earned $60,000 and a three-year PBA Tour exemption. The win also moved him into a four-point lead over Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the PBA Player of the Year race with only four events remaining on the 2009-10 schedule.

“I can’t believe I bowled a game like that on this lane condition,” the 28-year-old O’Neill said. “I found a little hold area and that’s all I needed. The ball did the rest.”

In addition to his Black Widow Nasty, O’Neill used a Hammer Jacked during the week to adjust to the ever-changing U.S. Open conditions.

“Bill is proving what we knew all along…he’s one of the up and coming stars of the PBA tour,” said Jeff Ussery, Hammer Brand Manager.  “With his second title notched, Bill’s poised to make a great run at PBA Player of the Year, and Hammer’s been right there with him.”
