HAMMER’S BILL O’NEILL MAKES IT GOOD WITH RAZYR Bowler finally wins a title at PBA Chameleon Cham
Hammer’s Bill O’Neill continued his success from the Motor City Open by winning the PBA Chameleon Championship, televised yesterday on ESPN. Battling a difficult pattern, O’Neill’s Hammer Razyr saved the day for him.
O’Neill’s Razyr brought him two 300 games in qualifying, against Steve Jaros in one match, and Walter Ray Williams, Jr. in another. This helped make the decision to use the Razyr in the finals as well.
“The Chameleon this week was extremely difficult because of the amount of hook left of the second arrow,” explained O’Neill. “I chose to use the Razyr because it allowed me to play right of the ten-board and consistently hit the pocket without leaving a lot of splits and hard spare conversions.” Compared to a typical bowling league pattern, the Chameleon is dry in the track area, left of the second arrow, making it difficult for most bowlers to control their ball and make good shots.
While O’Neill is relieved to win his first title, after eleven appearances on television, he didn’t feel like he needed to prove himself to anyone. “I just wanted to stop them from asking the same question all the time,” said O’Neill.
In the semifinal match, O’Neill faced PBA legend Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, who was named #21 of the top 50 PBA bowlers of all time. Monacelli was battling a severe case of tendonitis which completely crippled his game. It was disheartening to O’Neill to have to face Monacelli in such poor condition.
“You never like to bowl someone when they are not 100%,” said O’Neill. “Amleto is a great guy and has been extremely nice to me since the first day I met him as a young punk rookie.”
As a member of the Hammer PBA staff, O’Neill has benefitted from the support of Jeff Ussery, Hammer brand manager.
“Jeff has taken the time to teach me a ton about the difference in our line,” said O’Neill. “That helped me to make the right decisions during competition. I believe that the Hammer balls are the most versatile product line in the industry right now, and I’ve had success with them all.”
O’Neill is looking forward to continuing his success this season. The 2005-2006 PBA Rookie of the Year currently preparing for the World Championships in December.
